You don't have to be so self absorbed. It is an unfortunate habit of the modern world that promotes the view that the individual comes first. This is an egocentric view of things that is neither natural nor ideal. There are primitive tribes who have never seen their image and find it curious and amazing when they see their image or reflection in a mirror or in water. They have grown accustomed to seeing themselves in other people, in the natural world that surrounds them. This is the best habit to cultivate. By seeing oneself in others and in the natural world that exists one is immediately drawn to the balance of the natural world. The art of seeing oneself not as a unique individual but a part of humanity removes selfish goal directed behaviour and encourages virtue. The natural laws that promote the survival of an eco-system without discord are the same laws that we should follow in the conduct of our own lives. All interaction involves looking at the big picture, appreciating the surroundings and then making purposeful decisions. It is somewhat like playing a team sport. The quick movements of players in a game rely on the player using insight, judgment and imagination in relation to the game, which keeps the actions of the player coordinated and purposeful without the need for constant self-evaluation. The individual must always move in tune with the surroundings, which is more intuitive and fosters behaviour that is more genuine and creative. Once you become overly self-indulgent you have stopped playing the game.
